Lessons to learn from the 1998 Ice Storm crisis in Québec
With the looming energy crisis in Europe, there is lots to learn from how the Canadian province of Québec dealt with the 1998 Ice Storm crisis.
OK, this is not directly related to COVID-19, which Québec handled as poorly as most other Western jurisdictions. It’s about the expected energy crisis in Europe.
When confronted to such crisis back in 1998, the province handled things pretty amazingly, according to most accounts. It was a gigantic effort, involving the population, the military, government. There are lots of lessons to draw.
European countries have the huge advantage of usually milder climates, and also time to prepare. But will they prepare as they should?
To learn about this dramatic episode, it is worth watching, and learning from, this account of how this incredibly severe ice storm, that cut electricity (and heating) to millions, was handled.
This account, in French, is also excellent.
